PDP permitted me to become minister under APC — Wike

Nyesome Wike, the recently appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has shot down rumors that he will join the ruling All Progressives Congress, claiming that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gave him permission to accept President Bola Tinubu’s appointment as minister.

The single opposition party representative in President Tinubu’s cabinet, Wike, claimed that his presence in the FCT was intended to bring about the benefits of democracy and restore the area to its former glories.

The Minister unveiled a 10-point agenda during his first press conference, focusing on security, city sanitation, maintaining the Abuja Master Plan, infrastructure development, restoring green spaces, removing shanties, stopping revenue leaks, and ground rent payments, among other deliverables.

When asked whose party’s flag he will probably hang in his office as Minister of the FCT, the new minister stated that inhabitants of the FCT should be more concerned about serious problems that need immediate attention than about any party flags he might fly.

Why should it matter whose political party flag I will be flying? Bring the Labour Party flag, and I will fly it, as well as the PDP banner. You think people care about the party flag I fly when the FCT is in this state.

I’ll fly the Nigerian flag and make sure the Federal Capital Territory lives up to its founders’ aspirations. We’ll return FCT to its proper position. The fact that this is not the FCT of the founding fathers has been decried by numerous people. The issue of security must be addressed. People should travel to FCT for vacations, he argued.

According to Wike, when the president informed him of his nomination as a minister, the president contacted the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagun, the South-South zone chairman of the party, and his Rivers State chairman to inform them of the appointment, and they all responded in writing expressing their acceptance.
