Eze Onyekpere blames INEC for election irregularities that led to the tribunal getting involved

A legal practitioner, Eze Onyekpere, has raised concerns regarding the recent judgment by the PEPT (Presidential Election Petition Tribunal), stating that the judgment seemed to rebuke the petitioners for bringing election matters to the court. He argued that despite numerous alleged irregularities in the 2023 Presidential election, the tribunal exempted the electoral commission from blame.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Onyekpere highlighted the obstacles faced by the petitioners in accessing materials and information needed for their case. He noted that INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) had initially delayed providing access to BVAS (Biometric Verification and Authentication System) and materials, and even after gaining access, the petitioners had limited time to utilize them before INEC sought to wipe off the data due to the upcoming election.

Onyekpere expressed concerns that the judgment repeatedly emphasized the petitioners’ failure, almost as if it were a rebuke for bringing the case to court. He stressed that when government agencies like INEC are presumed to be involved in irregularities, it is essential for the commission to provide explanations to justify their actions.
