NYSC Confirms that Culture minister is a serving corps member

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed that Hannatu Musawa, the minister of art, culture and creative economy, is a serving corps member.

The Cable reported that, This follows a claim by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a civil society organisation, that Musawa is undertaking the one-year mandatory youth service scheme while she is still a member of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

The minister’s status as a corps member was confirmed to TheCable on Thursday by Eddy Megwa, director of press and public relations at the NYSC headquarters.

When TheCable approached him with questions, Megwa said in a message, “Yes she is a serving corp member.”

President Tinubu swore in 45 ministers, including Musawa, as federal executive council (FEC) members on Monday.

However, HURIWA asserted in a statement on Wednesday that the cultural minister is a NYSC volunteer whose major assignment is a legal company in Abuja.

When reached by TheCable, the minister didn’t respond to messages asking for a comment or calls placed to her mobile phone.

The rights organization urged Musawa to choose between concentrating on her ministerial post or her national youth service.

The statement reads, “HURIWA questioned why Musawa’s true status wasn’t made known to the public before the senate sensationally failed to screen her as it should.”

“HURIWA questions the level of scrutiny used by the Department of State Services to keep the fact that the minister is a former youth corper a secret.

The rights organization claimed that Musawa abandoned her NYSC in Ebonyi state years ago but later expressed interest in finishing it.

Before President Tinubu chose her as a candidate, the organization stated that the minister was mobilized this year and sent to a legal firm in Abuja.

“She was confirmed by the senate without proper screening and sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as minister of arts,” HURIWA added.
