Rivers Won't Tolerate Any Illegal Protest Actions After Presidential Tribunal Judgment – Gov Fubara

As the country anxiously awaits the judgement to be delivered by the five-man panel of Appeal Court Justices currently presiding over the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) in the nation’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Rivers State Government has issued a strong warning against any form of unlawful public protests that may arise from the court ruling within its domain.

In a statement personally signed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and sighted by Sahara Reporters, residents of the state were warned not go beyond the bounds of the law in expressing their grievances on whatever judgment the tribunal justices may deliver on the election petitions filed before them, adding that the state will not tolerate any form of illegal or unnecessary public protests that will undermine peace and safety in the state.

He then went on to urge the presidential candidates involved at the tribunal to call their respective followers and support groups to maintain law and order in the state, adding that those who are dissatisfied with the outcome of the tribunal still have the opportunity to seek redress at the Supreme Court.

Parts of the statement reads; “Those who may be disappointed by tomorrow’s judgment have the further opportunity to exercise their right of Appeal at the Supreme Court where they will be bound by the final decision and outcome. Accordingly, while the Rivers State Government recognizes the protest right of citizens, it will not tolerate any illegal and unnecessary protest actions that negate the rule of law and undermine our collective rights to peace and security.

We therefore, advise presidential candidates and their political parties to call their supporters and activists to order and ensure that they avoid actions that are capable of disrupting public safety, peace and security in Rivers State.”
