Niger Coup: 'You Have Cut Off Their Light But What If They Dam Their Water, What Will You Do?'-Ningi

A Federal Lawmaker representing Bauchi State, Senator Abdul Ningi has alleged that cutting off the power supply of Niger by Nigeria could imply that Niger will dam their water. He said in an interview with Channels Tv that President Bola Tinubu has broken the agreement of supplying electricity to the Niger Republic while they provide water to the Shinroro dam. He further stated that if Niger dam their water, it’s going to affect the power generation in Nigeria. 

He said, ”There is a historical antecedent. You know the River that flows from Niger through Mali to Nigeria, it was an agreement that was reached between Nigerian government and Niger as far back as 1963. We supply you with electricity and in place of that, you must not dam this water that comes to Shinroro. 

I thought the Ecowas should have known that, and I thought President Tinubu should have known that there was an agreement like that. Now, you have cut off their light but what if they dam their water, what will you do? It’s going to be a problem. It’s only In the Niger Republic that Naira is a legal tender in the whole world. If you go and give them naira, they will collect it. So this will affect the entire system.”
