Niger Coup: Why Russian President Called Me – Mali’s Military Leader, Assimi Goita

According to Vanguard, Assimi Goita, the military leader of Mali said on Tuesday that he had a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, about the crisis in Niger, where a military junta seized power in a coup.

In a tweet, Goita said, “Putin stressed the importance of achieving a peaceful resolution to the situation in order to ensure peace and stability in the Sahel region.”

It was reported that western nations fear that Niger could go the same way as neighbouring Mali, whose leaders hired private soldiers from Russia’s Wagner group to help them fight an insurgency after overthrowing the democratic government three years ago, which led to the departure of French troops.

Putin has called for a return to democratic order in Niger, while Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner chief welcomed the coup. However, support for the Russian President has appeared to surge in Niger Republic since the July 26 coup, with the supporters of military junta waving Russian flags at several rallies.
