Niger Coup: Tension Heightens As Niger Republic Cuts Off Ties With Nigeria As Peace Talk Collapses

Following the failure of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to resolve the ongoing crisis, the military junta in Niger Republic has decided to sever diplomatic relations with several countries, including Nigeria.

Despite ECOWAS giving a seven-day ultimatum for the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum to avert potential clashes with the junta, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a high-level delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) to meet with the coup leaders. However, the delegation only engaged with junta representatives.

As a consequence, Niger has decided to cut off ties with Nigeria, as well as with Togo, France (its former colonial power), and the United States. The junta announced the termination of the functions of the Republic of Niger’s extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors to these countries. This announcement was made on national television by one of the individuals involved in the coup.
