Niger Coup: Negotiation Fails, Niger Junta To Recall Ambassador From Nigeria

The military junta led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani in the Republic of Niger plans to recall the Nigerien Ambassador to Nigeria after failing to reach an agreement with the delegation of the Economic Community of West African States on the return of democracy in Niger.

The junta also intends to recall Nigerien ambassadors to Togo, the United States, and France as it attempts to oust French and US soldiers from the nation, while also declaring the end of all Memorandums of Understanding between France and the Republic of Niger. Defence sources with knowledge of the ongoing Meeting in Niamey, Niger’s capital, verified the news to The PUNCH Friday morning.

“The current negotiations have failed. The junta has proclaimed that it will recall Niger’s ambassadors to Nigeria, Togo, France, and the United States,” a reliable defence source said in a brief message to The PUNCH Friday morning. “The junta has just announced that it will evict French and US troops in Niger Republic, noting that all MoU agreements between France and Niger have ended,” according to another source familiar with the situation.

Tchiani, the former Head of Presidential Guard to the hoisted President, Mohamed Bazoum, headed a military junta in Niger that detained Bazoum in a palace coup on July 26,2023, while Tchiani afterwards declared himself Head of State. In an effort to settle the political situation in the Niger Republic, ECOWAS despatched two delegations abroad on Thursday, with the mandate to achieve a resolution to end the impasse.
