Niger Coup: I'm Holding Back ECOWAS From Coming Hard On Junta Leaders – Tinubu

According to President Bola Tinubu, he has been preventing other ECOWAS leaders from acting on their joint threat to overthrow the military junta in the Niger Republic, Daily Post Nigeria reports.

The Nigerian President, who on Thursday hosted a team of Islamic scholars (Ulamas), stated that they needed to make quick progress in their talks with the military junta to avoid angering ECOWAS.

Remember that the Ulamas earlier had conversations with the military junta to help the Niger Republic restore its constitutional democracy.

Sheikh Bala Lau, who led the group to the Villa on Thursday, briefed President Tinubu in-depth on the results of their interaction with the Niger junta.

Following the Ulamas’ most recent two trips to the Niger Republic, a briefing was held.

As further initiatives are being taken to avert violent conflict, the military junta is reportedly inclined to deepen dialogue with ECOWAS with a more thorough endorsement of the ECOWAS position by Niger military council officials.

President Tinubu, however, stressed that he is leading the charge for a peaceful resolution of the crisis, even in the face of more hawkish individuals calling for swifter intervention, in response to the delegation of Ulamas, against the backdrop of ethnic rumours spread by domestic political figures inside and outside of the country.

“I am in charge of a grave issue. If you ignore ECOWAS, other people, those who are beyond our control, will respond. I am the one holding those sides back. I am the one holding back ECOWAS,” he disclosed.
