Niger Coup; ECOWAS Schedule Another Meeting Over Niger Coup As Deadline Elapses

According to Vanguard, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has scheduled a new meeting on the coup in the Republic of Niger as the deadline previously set for the military junta has expired.

Recall that ECOWAS met in Abuja in August, where the Nigerian junta was given a seven-day deadline to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum or risk sanctions, including possible military intervention.

But the junta severed ties with Nigeria and several other countries sympathetic to Bazoum’s cause, rather than reinstating the deposed Nigerian leader.

The military regime, which appointed its commander-general, Abdourahamane Tchiani, as the new head of state, promised not to bow to outside pressure.

It also warned against foreign intervention and pledged to defend Niger’s territorial integrity.

On Friday, military chiefs from some West African countries said they had agreed on a plan for possible military intervention should efforts to find a diplomatic solution fail.
