Niger Coup: ECOWAS Rejects Tchiani’s 3-Years Power Transition Plan

According to Dailypost, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected Niger junta’s three-year power transition plan. Abdel-Fatau Musa, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, made the statement during an interview with the BBC on Sunday.

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the Niger junta, announced in a televised broadcast on Saturday night that the military will hand over power to the civilian government within the next three years.

However, Abdel-Fatau Musa, during an interview with the BBC, described General Tchiani’s proposal as a smokescreen for diplomacy and dialogue.

Recall that on Saturday, a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, in a last-ditch diplomatic effort to reach a peaceful resolution with the junta in Niger.

After meeting with Tchiani, the ECOWAS delegation also met with the deposed Niger President, Mohamed Bazoum, but no truce has been reached yet.
