Tinubu: Who are those that moved redesign of naira that everybody is now blaming Emefiele?- Akeregha

Igho Akeregha, a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, raised a question regarding President Tinubu’s decision to replace all the service chiefs while retaining the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS).

During an interview on AIT’s Kakaaki program, Akeregha expressed his concerns about the ongoing Senate probe into oil subsidies during the Buhari regime. He criticized the staggering amount of 9.3 trillion naira spent within a span of 30 months.

Akeregha pointed out that previous parliaments, from the 6th to the 9th, have consistently initiated probes with high expectations, only to witness the eventual decline and lack of significant results. He expressed his hope that the current probe would be comprehensive and thorough in its examination.

Also, Akeregha emphasized the substantial impact of the 9.3 trillion naira expenditure by Buhari’s administration on Nigeria’s national revenue. He questioned what Buhari had left in the national treasury for Tinubu. He specifically focused on how this massive sum of money had been removed from Nigeria’s coffers, which led him to address the matter of Emefiele.

Akeregha investigated the origins of the decision to redesign the Nigerian currency and discovered that it was initially proposed by the former chairmen of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). These individuals approached President Buhari to suggest the need for currency redesign. Emefiele, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was later involved in the process because it is not possible to redesign the currency without the involvement of the CBN governor.

“Who are those that moved redesign of naira that everybody is now blaming Emefiele, my investigation found out that former EFCC chairman and ICPC chair, were two individuals that muted this idea and went to Buhari to tell him there is a need to redesign the naira. Emefiele was only brought in midway because you can not redesign naira without the CBN governor. Why did Tinubu remove all the service chiefs and left the DG of the DSS”

Finally, Akeregha raised a pertinent question regarding the detention of Emefiele, wondering why President Tinubu decided to remove all the service chiefs while keeping the Director General of the DSS in place.
