National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal upheld the elections that produced two LP candidates in Lagos

According to reports from the Sahara Reporters on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, the National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday upheld the elections that produced two Labour Party (LP) candidates, Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi and Olawande George as winners of the Oshodi-Isolo Federal and Amuwo-Odofin Federal Constituencies.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Ganiyu Johnson, came in second with 16,650 votes, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the LP candidate the winner with 29,386 votes.

Ganiyu Johnson, the representative for the constituency from 2019 to 2023, challenged the election results, claiming fraud. On the other hand, the tribunal affirmed Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi and Olawande George’s eligibility as the validly elected candidates on Monday.

In a press release issued on Monday, Olubunmi Odesanya, the Labour Party’s Publicity Secretary in Lagos, expressed immense satisfaction with the tribunal’s rulings. She emphasized that these verdicts underscore the impartiality of the judicial system in handling election-related disputes.

The statement conveyed, “We take great pleasure in celebrating the triumphs of our incumbent Honourable Members of the House of Representatives, namely Honourable Okey-Joe Onuakalusi and Honourable Wande George, as the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Ikeja Lagos upheld their status as elected representatives for Oshodi-Isolo II and Amuwo-Odofin Federal Constituencies at the National Assembly in Abuja.

“This judgment reinforces the Labour Party’s faith in the judiciary’s ability to administer justice without any bias or partiality.

“We firmly believe that our great nation, Nigeria, can still be reformed with the right individuals in key state institutions. Labour Party extends its commendation to the Tribunal Judges for delivering this equitable and truthful ruling.”
