Tax Reforms: The President Wasn't Elected By Nigerians For Him To Impose Poverty On Them – Akeregha

Veteran journalist and public affairs analyst Igho Akeregha has urged the President not to overtax the poor Nigerian population in light of the three-year 18 percent tax to GDP (Gross Domestic Product) target set by the reforms committee that was recently established by the Bola Tinubu administration.

Akeregha, a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, argued that poor Nigerians, who are still suffering from the new administration’s economic policies that appear to be harsh, cannot afford to pay more taxes during an interview on Africa Independent Television’s ‘Kaakaki’ programme on Wednesday, August 9.

The seasoned journalist claims that because of the nation’s dire economic conditions, the government cannot expand its tax base while unemployment is at alarmingly high levels and businesses are closing.

“Where are the employment opportunities in Nigeria when you want to even tax the people?” he said. Take a look at how the government and citizens engage in employment fraud. Do any businesses in the nation today even still have employees? Nigerians did not elect the President to come in and force them into poverty.

He carried the proclamation “let the poor breath,” but how can impoverished Nigerians breathe if you are increasing their taxes? If I am to talk this morning with any seriousness, the President needs to address the corruption problem. The leaks in the system need to be sealed out by him.
