If Tinubu want to save, he should reduce his convoys & presidential fleet from 9 to 4 -Prof.Odinkalu

The Nigerian Tribune recently conducted an interview with Professor Chidi Odinkalu, a renowned human rights advocate and former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), where he addressed various issues including fiscal reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu.

When questioned about his views on the fiscal reforms, Professor Odinkalu stated that he would refrain from offering any opinions until the details of the reforms become clearer. However, he did highlight a potential solution to address the hardships caused by the removal of petrol subsidy. Professor Odinkalu suggested that President Tinubu should start by reducing the number of vehicles in his convoys, and also recommended a reduction in the presidential fleet from nine to four or five. Though he expressed doubts that Tinubu would actually implement such measures.

Hear him: “I think if Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu really wants to save, he should start by reducing the number of his convoys. The president should also reduce his presidential fleet from nine (9) to about four (4) or five (5). The fact is that Tinubu will not do so.”

Moreover, Professor Odinkalu pointed out that Tinubu’s administration has approved appointments for more advisers compared to former President Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu’s convoy is also larger, consuming petrol at a higher rate compared to Buhari’s convoy. This increase in size and expenditure adds to the overall cost of the government.

Regarding the issue of subsidy removal, Professor Odinkalu emphasized that as long as the naira continues to devalue and Nigeria remains reliant on imported refined petroleum products, it is inaccurate for Tinubu to claim that subsidy has been completely removed.
