PEPT:The judgment Wasn't surprising to us at all because we knew It'll end the way it did–Adegboruwa

Ebun Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Public Affairs Commentator, has offered his perspective on the decision of the presidential election petition tribunal justices regarding the 2023 presidential election.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged as the winner of the presidential election, defeating other strong contenders, including Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Both Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar had challenged Tinubu’s victory in the Presidential Election Tribunal in Abuja, but their petitions were struck out by the court.

In an exclusive interview reported by The Punch paper, Ebun Adegboruwa shared his perspective on the outcome. He stated that senior lawyers, including himself, had anticipated the tribunal’s decision and were not surprised by it. Adegboruwa suggested that the lawyers representing the petitioners might have been able to present a stronger case, particularly in terms of the witnesses they produced. He noted that the disqualification of several witnesses may have affected the outcome of the case.

He said; “We senior lawyers knew from day one that these petitions would end the way they did. The judgment was not surprising to us at all. It is true that maybe the lawyers of the petitioners could have done better, especially with the kind of witnesses they produced. When you have a case where 10 witnesses were being disqualified, then maybe they could have done better in those areas.”

The comments made by Ebun Adegboruwa have generated reactions from many Nigerians on social media, as reported by The Punch paper on its verified Facebook page.
