Niger junta told us it was Bazoum that instructed ECOWAS to cut power supply to Niger – Abdur-Rahman Ahmad

According to a recent report from Punch paper published this morning, Abdur-Rahman Ahmad, the National Missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, who was part of a delegation visiting the Republic of Niger following the coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum, shared details of their meeting with the Niger Republic coup junta during an interview with a Punch correspondent.

During the interview, Ahmad was asked about his assessment of President Bazoum’s safety. He mentioned that they had requested to see the ousted President, but the military leaders expressed security concerns, preventing them from doing so. Ahmad expressed concerns about Bazoum’s safety, health, and well-being, highlighting that holding anyone in custody, whether protective or punitive, is a cause for concern. The coup leaders clarified that Bazoum was not in prison but under house arrest.

Ahmad also discussed their conversation regarding electricity supply, where the Niger junta claimed that Bazoum had instructed ECOWAS to cut power supply to Niger. However, Ahmad suggested that their visit might have prompted a reconsideration of the situation, as the junta began allowing access to Bazoum’s doctor. The ongoing concern, Ahmad mentioned, is ensuring Bazoum’s son can return to school, which could potentially be part of ECOWAS terms during their upcoming meeting.
