The victim, a musician and final- year student at Nnamdi Azikwe University in Awka, is said to have entered the wrong house by accident. As a result, he was falsely accused of robbery and executed.

The event happened in the Onireke neighborhood of the Ojo Local Government Council on Ganiyu Jimoh Street, across from the Ojo Military Cantonment. The deceased was described as a budding musician who had also written and produced a single. According to reports, ChigozieR17; s problems began on July 28 at around 6 a. m. when he wandered out of his apartment at number 18 Onugah Street in Onireke.
He is believed to have wandered off and leaped into a compound before the landlord discovered him and called the police. The alarm from the guard caught the attention of a guard and some citizens, who charged at him and beat him unconscious with a machete after mistaking him for an armed thief.
However, according to a witness who only went by the name Shola, he was saved by a passerby who recognized him as a mentally ill individual and contacted his family. He expressed regret that some neighbors had mistaken him for a thief and raised the alarm, drawing more neighbors who pounced on him. He received multiple cuts as well as a ruthless beating.
He was taken away as soon as his family arrived on the scene. The incident was reported to the Onireke Police Station, where three suspects, including the security guard, were detained in connection with it.
