LP Chieftain, Yunusa Tanko Clears Air On His Party's Rumored Merger Discussions With PDP And NNPP

In the wake of the rumored ongoing discussions between opposition candidates comprising of Peter Obi, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, prominent northern politician and Labour Party chieftain, Dr. Yunusa Tanko has come out to dismiss any potential merger between his party’s flag bearer and others as regards the presidential elections.

Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s ‘Politics Today’ on Monday night, Tanko, who is the official spokesman for the Obi-Datti Media Office, argued that the rumored merger is not possible, because for such to happen between the Labour Party, PDP, and NNPP, it means they have to register a new political party altogether and submit such documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for accreditation.

He however, did not rule out the possibility of private discussions between the three candidates, especially on how to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress.”

He said; “At this point, permit me to make a clarification. When you talk about a merger, it means political parties from different parts of the country, submit their documents together to INEC, and then they would be pronounced as a new political party. And that is not obtainable at the moment. So, a merger is completely out of the question.

But when you talk about discussions for a working alliance with other political parties, that one is very possible.”
