US, France Using Nigeria To Attack Niger—El-Zakzaky

The leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against attacking Niger Republic.

El-Zakzaky alleged that France and the United States, US, are trying to use Nigeria to attack Niger Republic.

He said Tinubu should understand that Nigeria and Niger Republic are one going by history, noting that such a move was shocking.

He stressed that Tinubu should reconsider the planned attack on Niger Republic.

In a statement he signed, El-Zakzaky traced the historical unity between Nigeria and Niger.

We’ll Take Over Bayelsa—Sylva

A former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) will take over during the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Bayelsa State.

He stated this on Tuesday while fielding questions from State House reporters after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to solicit support in his quest to return as governor of the oil rich state.

Sylva, a former governor, who served only one term and could not secure a re-election ticket on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2011, said this time, he has garnered enough experience and maturity to bring positive development as governor to Bayelsa State.

The former minister, who used the occasion to unfold his six-point agenda, expressed his readiness to retake his seat on the platform of the ruling APC.

Tension has remained high in Niger Republic as the military junta refused entry to a negotiating mission planned for Tuesday by the United Nations, African Union (AU) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

U.S. diplomat Victoria Nuland spoke with members of the junta in the capital, Niamey, on Monday, but was not allowed to meet either the detained President Mohamed Bazoum or the military ruler General Abdourahamane Tchiani.

However, the U.S. government said it would continue to hope for a diplomatic solution, State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, said on Tuesday.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned protest scheduled to hold today (Wednesday), August 9, 2023.

NARD President, Innocent Orji, made this known on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily breakfast programme on Wednesday.

According to him, the industrial action by the association, however, continues.

Orji said, “Yes, we put on hold the protest that was supposed to start this (Wednesday) morning but the strike is continuing. We’ll review again in 72 hours; that’s the position of the National Executive Council.”

The NARD President said his colleagues have eight major demands including the need for the government to recruit new hands to replace those who have left the system through migration (brain drain) or death.
