Join politics to stop fraudulent elections, Obasanjo tells Christians

The former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Saturday said elections in Nigeria were corrupt, urging Christians to fully participate in politics to make it clean.

According to Punch, He announced this at The Gospel Faith Mission International’s 67th anniversary celebration and 57th annual conference, both of which were held at Gospel City, Ogunmakin on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

Speaking on the topic of “The Roles of the Church in Nation Building at a Time Like This,” Obasanjo asserted that the church must step up to the plate as the world’s salt at times of instability, hopelessness, poverty, and depression.

“Corruption is the foundation of elections in Nigeria, and you cannot make anything good with corruption as its foundation.”

He mentioned the 1999 elections, citing the local government election, where the PDP was defeated, as the two first depressing and unpleasant experiences he had.

We held local government elections in 1999, which were “the two first sad and bad experiences that I had.”

They asked me where the money for the police, money for INEC, and money for DSS was a few days before the poll. I responded, “No money, money for DSS.”

Obasanjo stated that he did not make funds accessible because he believed that all government entities ought to have received compensation for carrying out their obligations.

When Obasanjo was president, the General-Overseer of GOFAMINT, E. O. Abina, recalled meeting him while he was teaching Sunday School during a visit to Aso Rock Chapel. He continued by saying that when they spoke upon his arrival at the convention center, the former President informed him to his surprise that he was still teaching Sunday School.
