The Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, on Tuesday, said the country is proposing an initiative to resolve the political crisis in neighbouring Republic of Niger with a six-month transition period led by a civilian.

Attaf, who recently toured West African states, said, “Most of the countries we have talked to are against military intervention to end the crisis,” as quoted by Reuters.

President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted on July 26 in a military coup led by the former commander of Niger’s presidential guard, Abdourahamane Tchiani.

Leaders in the Economic Community of West African States said that they would keep all options on the table for a peaceful resolution to the crisis and ordered the activation of an ECOWAS standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger.

Lagos State Government paid N2.017 billion as retirement benefits to 644 of its retirees Wednesday.

Director-General, Lagos State Pension Commission, (LASPEC) Mr Babalola Obilana, disclosed this at the 101st batch Retirement Bond Certificate presentation for retirees in Lagos State.

Obilana said Wednesday’s payment represented the retirees’ past service benefits prior to the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme in 2007.

He noted that the event was organised to celebrate a significant milestone and exceptional retirees who had dedicated their time, energy and talents to the service of Lagos State.

“It is indeed an honour to recognise and commend the retirees’ hard work and commitment demonstrated throughout their years of service to Lagos State.

“This retirement bond certificate presentation is not just a formality; it is a moment to reflect upon the remarkable contributions you all have made.

“Your unwavering dedication has helped to shape Lagos State into the Centre of Excellence it is today.

“These retirement bond certificates symbolise more than just financial rewards; they represent the trust and confidence we have in our retirees.

“They are a testament to the lasting impact you have made just as your dedication has been the bedrock of the goal of a greater Lagos State,’’ Obilana said.

In his remarks, Mr Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, lauded Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritising the welfare of public service workforce even in retirement.

Niger: UN seeks ECOWAS exemption for relief supplies

The United Nations on Tuesday said an exemption request for relief supplies to the Niger Republic has been submitted to the Economic Community of West African States.

The UN said sanctions on Niger were blocking vital humanitarian aid such as food and medicine.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees representative for Niger, Emmanuel Gignac, stated this at a press briefing during a visit to Geneva.

Reuters said trucks with food and humanitarian aid have been piling up at Niger’s land borders since a military coup on July 26, driving up food prices, in a sign of the impact of the sanctions. The blockade is designed to pressure the junta to restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to office.
