Imo Labour Party Decries Attack on Its Office Allegedly by Agents of Imo Govt

DAILY POST reports that the Imo State chapter of the Labour Party has expressed deep concern over a recent incident in which its state office was attacked by individuals believed to be affiliated with the Imo state government. The attack occurred at the Labour Party’s state office on Wethedral Road in Owerri. More than twenty men, suspected to have connections with the state government, reportedly invaded the premises.

During this intrusion, campaign billboards and banners belonging to the party’s candidate, which had been set up the day before, were destroyed. Chief Bright Offirum, the LP State Publicity Secretary, led journalists on a tour of the vandalized office. He revealed that the attack was orchestrated by individuals associated with the Imo state militia Ebubeagu, who were accompanied by armed policemen and thugs. The attack seemed to be prompted by the growing popularity of the Labour Party in the state.

Offirum shared that when they questioned the attackers about their motives, they indicated that they had received directives from higher authorities, referring to them as “oga at the top.” He added, “We are reliably informed that since the visit of our party presidential candidate His Excellency Peter Obi to flag off gubernatorial campaign of our candidate ,Senator Athan Achonu to state which pulled mammoth crowd the governor had been afraid of our party governorship candidate. But demolishing the party campaign materials would not save him from defeat come November 11.”

Condemning the government’s display of political recklessness and intolerance, Offirum urged the party’s supporters and loyalists to remain steadfast in their commitment to the party. He underscored that the Labour Party is uniquely positioned to address the array of challenges confronting the state, including security issues and violence.
