Tribunal Sacks Lagos LP Rep Sowunmi, Declares APC’s Ogunyemi Winner

The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal in Lagos has reportedly made a decision to remove Hon. Seyi Sowunmi, the Labour Party’s House of Representatives member for Ojo Federal Constituency in Lagos State, and has declared Lanre Ogunyemi, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the authentic winner.

The three-member panel, led by Justice Abdullahi Ozegya, reached this decision based on their examination of the national assembly election that took place on February 25, 2023. The tribunal determined that Lanre Ogunyemi of the APC should have been declared the winner of the Ojo Federal Constituency race.

The judgment was influenced by a petition challenging the victory of Seyi Sowunmi from the Labour Party. The tribunal agreed with the petitioner’s assertion that Sowunmi was not eligible to contest the national assembly election. As a result, Sowunmi’s votes were considered wasted, and the candidate who came in second place, Lanre Ogunyemi of the APC, was declared the winner.

Lanre Ogunyemi, a two-term member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, initiated the legal challenge by disputing the declaration of Sowunmi as the winner of the February 25 national assembly election. Ogunyemi’s argument centered on Sowunmi’s alleged lack of proper sponsorship and eligibility to contest the election under the Labour Party for Ojo Federal Constituency.

The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal’s judgment deemed Lanre Ogunyemi of the APC as the rightful winner of the Ojo Federal Constituency race, following a legal challenge to the victory of Seyi Sowunmi from the Labour Party.
