"If Democracy Is All About Choices, Then Let The Will Of The People Determine Who Leads Us" -Okutepa

Jibrin Okutepa, SAN, the legal representative of the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has emphasized that true democracy allows Nigerians to make choices about their leadership. He asserted that compelling citizens to align with specific directions and vote for failed political parties contradicts the essence of democracy.

In his tweet on Saturday as seen in the screenshot below, Mr. Okutepa described Nigeria’s form of democracy as unconventional and even absurd. He expressed amusement at witnessing individuals whose future prospects are being undermined, supporting detrimental actions due to partisan interests. He further cautioned that the adverse consequences of the present-day support for unethical practices would eventually affect those who are backing such actions.

He wrote, “Democracy involves choices, and the will of the people should determine Nigeria’s leadership. Forcing people to adopt a particular stance and vote for failed political parties goes against the principles of democracy. Nigeria’s democracy is, to say the least, eccentric.”

Jibrin Okutepa is known for his vocal criticism of ineffective governance in Nigeria. He has frequently scrutinized various government institutions, including his peers in the legal field. As he emphasized in his tweet, refraining from manipulating politics for personal gain is crucial for Nigeria’s development.
