“When I was in JSS3, everybody got used to me. We were friends, and they didn’t get scared of me.” Something happened last year. I was depressed because one day when I went to buy something, some children said that they were afraid to come close to me so as not to catch the same thing”. Catherine further narrated how she went home and vented her anger on her parents, who brought an adult with the same condition to sensitize her and make her understand that she is fine the way she is.

Additionally, Catherine’s mother narrated how she observed the condition when her daughter was a baby. She noted that when she went to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, the doctors told her to apply sunscreen to her baby’s skin, claiming that her daughter’s condition was caused by exposure to the sun.
