I heard everything Wike said on TV yesterday, but our problem is that we act before we think–Charles

Professor Charles Nwekeaku, of the Nasarawa State University, recently discussed the plans of the new FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for the federal capital. During an interview on Arise TV, Prof. Nwekeaku shared his insights.

He explained that policies are like roadmaps for actions, helping guide decisions. Despite a common belief that Nigeria’s problems stem from poor policy implementation, Prof. Nwekeaku disagreed. He stated that implementation is an integral part of policy-making. He was asked about the Abuja master plan and its connection to Nigeria’s rush for results.

According to him; “When you have a policy, you should follow it squarely. Policy actually provides a framework for action, it’s kind of a guide. But the popular saying in Nigeria is that the problem of Nigeria is not the policies but the implementation. I disagree with that because implementation is part of the policy process. So as a matter of fact, you asked of the the Abuja master plan and all that but first, the way Nigerians rush everything kind of have an effect on that.”

He pointed out that a major issue lies in impulsive actions preceding thoughtful consideration. This habit has been problematic. Referencing Wike’s recent TV statements after being inaugurated as the FCT Minister, Prof. Nwekeaku noted that Wike plans to demolish structures not aligned with the Abuja master plan. Despite Wike’s previous role as Rivers state governor, his announcement highlights a lack of understanding about the master plan.

He further said; “Our problem is that we act before we think and I think that is what has been the problem. For example, I heard everything Wike said on TV yesterday, he has been Inaugurated as the new minister of the FCT. And he started by saying he will pull down any structure not in line with the Abuja master plan, I know he was the former governor of Rivers state but it shows he hasn’t read much about the master plan.”
