Ministerial screening: Why Senate should reconsider decision to drop El-Rufai – Doyin Okupe

A chieftain of the Labour Party, LP, Doyin Okupe, has asked the Senate to reconsider its decision to drop one of the ministerial nominees of President Bola Tinubu and immediate past governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai.

Rather than dismissing El-Rufai, Okupe believes the Senate should demand on an undertaking from the former governor before his confirmation that he will refrain from making any religious comments or remarks while in office as minister.

On Wednesday, the former Senior Special Adviser on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan stated this on his own Twitter profile.

“I am not a fan of Mallam El Rufai, whom I consider to be a radical of some kind and who has recently demonstrated some traits of religious extremism,” he stated.

“However, few will question El Rufai’s competence and immense ability to perform.” If he is being considered for the power ministry, I do not believe we should chop our noses to spite our faces.

“The power ministry is critical to our economy and to our serious efforts to combat poverty.”

“If any Nigerian can solve our energy problems, former Governor El Rufai is without a doubt one of them,” Okupe added.

Remember that El-Rufai was one of the 28 ministerial nominees that the President had previously submitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

Senator David Umahi (Ebonyi), Olawale Edun (Ogun State), Ahmed Dangiwa (Katsina State), Uche Nnaji (Enugu State), Stella Okotete (Delta State), Adebayo Adelabu (Oyo State), Ekperikpe Ekpo (Cross River State), and Hannatu Musawa (Katsina State) were among those tested with El Rufai.

During the ministerial screening, however, Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi West spoke out against El-Rufai. According to vanguard.
