"I don’t discuss presidential candidates any longer; I discuss the economy, and the president – Wike

According to a report by Daily Post paper on August 29, 2023, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), asserted that if Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, had possessed stronger qualifications, Nigerians might have chosen to support him in the general election held on February 25, 2023.

Wike expressed these views on a Wednesday episode of Channels Television’s Politics Today program. In the past, as the former Governor of Rivers State, he revealed his endorsement of President Bola Tinubu, the then-presidential nominee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), over Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the closely contested election.

While Wike declared that he no longer engages in discussions about presidential candidates, he emphasized his focus on matters such as the economy and the agenda of the incumbent president. He suggested that if Peter Obi had demonstrated stronger qualities, Nigerians might have been more inclined to vote for him during the election.

In his words: “I don’t discuss presidential candidates any longer; I discuss the economy, the president, what he has to offer.

He added: “If he (Obi) would have been better, Nigerians would have voted for him.”
