According to several reports, Chelsea have offered their highly rated young defender, Levi Colwill a new deal to extend his contract but the player needs some assurances from new manager, Mauricio Pochettino before signing anything.

The 20-year-old who was on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion last season and was super impressive has been offered a chance to remain at the club permanently in what would be Brighton’s record signing.

Robert De Zerbi’s team are still dreaming of the defender and they are going to insist on him in the next few weeks. But the reality is Chelsea are not open to sell and have offered him a new contract. It was a verbal conversation with his agent, but Levi’s side said to wait; ‘we don’t want to discuss anything now.’

There are no negotiations currently and it’s not about the salary, it’s more about the project. He does not want to be a backup player; he wants guaranteed gametime and to feel important. Otherwise, he would be prepared to move.

To be honest, we can’t really blame the youngster for wanting security following the craziness that has been happening at Chelsea. But this idea of him demanding gametime before he extends with the London club is very ridiculous.

At 20 years of age, no manager is going to hand you playing time simply because you’re demanding for it. If Pochettino really wants to succeed at Chelsea, he must be ready to be brutally honest with some of his decisions.

Colwill should know that he needs to earn the right to play and not just have to be played because you demand it. Chelsea already have Benoit Badiashile and have sold Kalidou Koulibaly to accommodate him. His competition is now with the Frenchman.

As the only two left footed centre-backs, the England under 21 star is definitely going to get his chances to show what he’s capable of. And if he proves he’s good enough and better than Badiashile, then he will be getting the starting position.

Pochettino must make it clear that in this new Chelsea, nothing will be handed to anybody. Every player who starts for the club must earn the right to do so.

And if Colwill isn’t willing to accept that and sign the new contract, then the club should simply cash out on him. Although, I wouldn’t want to see that happen, but the reality is, anyone who should play for Chelsea should be ready to fight and earn his spot.
