Fresh Coup: Army officers oust Bongo, "takes over power" in Gabon

Army officers in Gabon appeared on national television on Wednesday to declare their assumption of power, according to report by PUNCH.

They claimed to be nullifying the election results from the previous day, in which President Ali Bongo was pronounced the victor.

” We have chosen to safeguard peace by overthrowing the ruling dictatorship, the soldiers, who identified themselves as CTRI (the Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions), ” they stated.

Albert Ondo Ossa, Bongo’ s major rival, placed second with 30. 77%, according to the electoral commission. Bongo’ s team has refuted Ondo Ossa’ s claims of electoral irregularities.

His removal from office would put an end to his family’ s 53- year rule in Gabon.

The new development coincides with efforts to find a solution to the Niger Republic’ s democratically elected president being ousted.

As of the time of publishing this report, developments were still taking place; therefore, neither the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) nor the African Union (AU), which both denounced the coup in Niger, had yet to respond to the situation in Gabon.

However, many social media users have reacted to the development.
