PEPT: If FCT Has Equal Status With Other States, Why Is It That Only One Senator Represents FCT?-Ukeh

The decision of the presidential election petition tribunal in Abuja on Wednesday to dismiss all petitions filed by opposition parties against Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sparked mixed reactions.

Justice Haruna Tsammani, leading a five-member panel, dismissed the petitions filed by Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, upholding Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory.

In response to this, Nigerian columnist Onuoha Ukeh, talking to the Sun paper, argued that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) should not have the same status as other states in the federation. He pointed out that FCT is represented by only one senator in the Senate, while other states have three each. He also expressed difficulty in defending the position that “and” means “part of,” stating that this is not proper English language usage.
