The Kogi State Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dino Melaye, has said the party remains the party to beat in the upcoming election because of the level of devastation being left behind by the outgoing All Progressives Congress(APC) administration.

He said this after a meeting of Kogi PDP stakeholders from the three Senatorial zones of the state, with the members of the National Working Committee at the party‘s national secretariat, in Abuja yesterday.

Melaye said: “PDP is going to win the election in Kogi State because we have never had it so bad in the history of Kogi State. Our people were impoverished, salaries have not been paid, pensions have not been paid, gratuity has not been paid, the health sector is non-existent, in fact, all the General Hospitals in the state are mere consulting clinics.

“Education has gone moribund, this is what the PDP is coming to ameliorate and palate.”

“I want to assure you that by the grace of God. With the resolutions of this meeting, with the strategy adopted in this meeting, PDP is good to go in Kogi State.

My charge to Kogi State is that they should not be Intimidated by the APC, by the threat, violence, the humiliation by the APC should not deter them from exercising their Democratic rights. I want to assure you that we will protect our people.”

Earlier in his remarks, the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, expressed confidence that the party will emerge victorious.

According to him, the party’s leadership decided to convene the meeting in order to ensure that no stone was left unturned to ensure every party member and supporter in the state was onboard before the election

Nigeria’s Former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has reacted to the sudden death of the founder of Fountain of Life Church, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya.

Osinbajo in a statement shared on his official Twitter handle on Thursday, described Odukoya’s death as devastating, noting that the firmness of his faith and the soundness of his scriptural expositions will be missed.

He wrote: “Dolly, I and our children are devastated by the news of the passing of our dear friend and brother, Pastor Taiwo. Our hearts and prayers are with Tolu, Jimi, Tobi, Timilehin and Jomiloju.

“We will miss the firmness of his faith in the most difficult times, the soundness of his exposition of the scriptures, his fidelity to the true gospel of Jesus Christ, his childlike love of God translated so easily to worship, his transparency, his servant leadership, the affection and the love he showed so easily, his honesty, forthrightness and humility at all times.

“He inspired a whole generation of (then) very young men and women, many of whom are now grandparents and still in Christ and will by His grace be until we meet him again at the resurrection. Amen.”

Shettima Stresses Use Of Local Engineers.

Vice President, Kashim Ibrahim Shettima has stressed the need to prioritise the use of local engineers in government projects.

This is just as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) pleaded with the federal government to exempt it from the non-funding policy of professional and regulatory bodies in Nigeria.

Shettima spoke yesterday at the 31st Engineering Assembly held in Abuja. He emphasised the need for the government operatives to look inward and use the local engineers for government projects.

Represented by the governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulu, the VP said, “My take home is that the very important thing we should work on is the local content order–how we can ensure that our engineers will handle all engineering projects in Nigeria—if not all, at least 90 per cent.

“In Borno State, local engineers handle up to 98 per cent of infrastructural projects. I think this is something that we need to do. There are many senators in the National Assembly who can sponsor bills, there are governors and their deputies. So let us put our heads together. We can do something on the issues of local content.

FIRS Cannot Collect Revenue For Customs – Analysts.

The interim administrator of the Public Affairs Analyst Forum, Ayobami Ayelabowo Israel has challenged a proposal put forth by chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele.

Oyedele’s suggestion that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) could undertake revenue collection for entities like the Customs has been met with staunch opposition from the interim administrator.

The forum administrator emphasised that Oyedele’s stance remained merely his personal opinion and did not hold the weight of higher authorities.

He said the Customs Service, established by legislation, has been entrusted with the exclusive duty of collecting customs duties, regulating border goods, facilitating port goods clearance, and other related functions.

He said these responsibilities diverge from those of the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

He argued that Oyedele’s position might be in alignment with undisclosed motives to encroach upon the Nigeria Customs Service’s constitutionally designated responsibilities.
