Niger junta asks French ambassador to leave country in 48 hours

The military junta in Niger Republic has ordered Sylvain Itte, the French ambassador, to leave the country within 48 hours.

The Cable paper reported that, the country’s foreign ministry made the announcement in a statement on Friday.

The statement claims that the ambassador’s unwillingness to accept an invitation to meet with the foreign minister of Niger was the reason for his expulsion.

The statement further stated that “other actions by the French government contrary to the interests of Niger” were what caused the ambassador to leave.

The junta had accused French forces of releasing detained “terrorists” and violating an airspace ban in an effort to destabilize the country, though the foreign ministry did not give specifics.

The military of the nation had also claimed that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was allying with a foreign power that it did not name.

President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown in a coup, and France, a former colonial power in Niger, had denounced the coup and demanded a quick restoration of constitutional order.
