Gov Dapo Abiodun, Gbenga Daniel Clash Over Wife’s Plaza Demolition

The former governor of Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Daniel, and the Ogun State government clashed over the demolition of a plaza owned by his wife. The state government stated that the plaza violated physical planning laws, while he decried it as executive recklessness.

According to the Vanguard, the DATKEM plaza in Ijebu Ode, owned by Olufunke Daniel, was demolished by Ogun State government agents.

In a statement from his lawyer, Mr. Adeyinka Kotote, SAN, it was revealed that the state government had ignored court papers served on its agents, requesting a halt to actions on the building since September 7.

The building had been sealed by the Ogun State Planning and Development Authority on August 1, with a quit notice served on August 31. DATKEM applied for unsealing and regularization on August 2, paying the required fee of 500,000 naira.

Despite ongoing legal proceedings, the government demolished the complex, leaving the former governor’s family seeking justice in the courts.

The state government, in response, claimed that the building violated building codes and had numerous defects. Efforts to halt further development on the site were allegedly ignored by the developers.

The original proposal for the building in 2009 did not align with the construction on-site, which deted from specified airspaces and setbacks. Several contravention notices, stop-work orders, and demolition notices were served, but construction persisted, leading to the final demolition decision by the Zonal Town Planning Office.
