The Coalition of Northern Groups has refuted an allegation made by Garba Shehu, the spokesperson for former President Muhammadu Buhari, that Buhari delayed announcing the elimination of gasoline subsidies because he wanted Bola Tinubu to become the next president of Nigeria.

The CNG highlighted on Saturday that according to all of Buhari’s last-minute policies, he and his cabinet did not want Tinubu to win the presidency of Nigeria and that his (Buhari’s) choice to announce the elimination of fuel subsidies was more motivated by “indecisions” than by the Tinubu issue.

SaharaReporters had earlier in the week quoted Buhari’s Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, as saying that by delaying the announcement of the gasoline subsidy reduction, Buhari “helped” Tinubu win the election.

Finally, we must be politically honest with ourselves, Shehu remarked. Due to the APC’s need to win an election, the Buhari administration was unable to continue in its last days. And that would have been the case for any political party running for re-election under a new chief.

According to The Punch, the Coalition of Northern Groups’ spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, reportedly responded by saying, “The revelation by the former President Buhari did not come as a surprise to us at the CNG. If anything, it is proof of what we have been saying for the entire eight years that the Buhari administration was a bastion of bad governance, indifference, insensitivity, and unheard-of theft.
