"If Tinubu Wants To Save, He Should Reduce His Convoys & The Presidential Fleet From 9-4" -Professor Chidi Odinkalu

In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, the former national chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), shared his views on President Bola Tinubu’s fiscal reforms and other national issues. Odinkalu suggested that if Tinubu truly wanted to save money, he should start by reducing the number of his convoys and President Tinubu should reduce the presidential fleet from nine to about four or five. However, he expressed doubt that Tinubu would take such measures.

Odinkalu highlighted the differences between Tinubu’s administration and former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in terms of advisers, convoy size, and domestic staff appointments. He pointed out that Tinubu had more advisers, a larger convoy, and was appointing domestic staff at a faster pace than Buhari did during his presidency.

Regarding fuel subsidy, Odinkalu stated that as long as the Nigerian currency continues to devalue and the country relies on imported refined petroleum products, Tinubu cannot claim to have removed subsidy. He viewed such claims as fallacious, emphasizing the need for domestic refining capacity and a stable currency for true subsidy removal.

Overall, Odinkalu’s statements highlight his concerns about the cost of government and the need for fiscal prudence, particularly in areas such as convoy size and government staffing. He questions the effectiveness of certain measures taken by Tinubu’s administration and raises issues related to the affordability of fuel subsidy removal in the current economic context.
