Gabon: Onanuga Reacts As Military Take Over Power In Gabon

Bayo Onanuga, the Media and Publicity Director for the dissolved All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, has given his response to the recent seizure of power in Gabon.

According to a report by Punch , the military has removed Gabon’s President, Ali Bongo, shortly after his win in the presidential election. Soldiers from the nation appeared on Gabon’s national TV to announce their takeover. The coup leaders also declared the cancellation of the Saturday election and the dissolution of Gabon’s democratic government.

Reacting to these recent events, Onanuga expressed on his Twitter account that the coup leaders are power-hungry dictators. The former media aide to Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wrote “Another example of a military coup in Africa. Democracy’s advancement is being impeded, mainly due to authoritarian African leaders who grasp onto authority.”

Punch reports that this fresh coup in Africa coincides with attempts to deal with the removal of Mohamed Bazoum, a democratically elected president in Niger Republic. However, both the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), who have rejected the coup in Niger, have not yet responded to the situation in Gabon at the time of writing.
