Gabon Coup: There's No Antidote To Good Governance, A Coup Won't Succeed If The People Are Happy' – Dr. Victor Okhai

In the midst of the ongoing military takeover in Gabon, which follows the removal of President Ali Bongo Ondimba from power, Dr. Victor Okhai, a recognized African Affairs Analyst, has emphasized that the foundation for thwarting a coup attempt against a democratically elected government lies in good governance.

During an interview on ARISE TV’s ‘THISDAY’ program on Wednesday, August 30, Dr. Okhai highlighted that when citizens are content with the democratically elected administration, any endeavor to overthrow it would face significant challenges.

He stated, “There is no alternative to good governance. If the populace is content, a coup’s success becomes an uphill task. As I mentioned, Bongo’s actions contributed to the ingredients for this coup. If you desire Western democracy, then allow it to thrive without imposing your will on the people.”

Dr. Okhai underlined that poor governance, corruption, and imposition, either by leaders themselves or external influences, can lead to the outbreak of coups. Thus, his advice to presidents is to govern effectively, eschew corruption, and derive their authority from the people rather than external forces.
