Tinubu's Request: Senators Reject Military Invasion Of Niger

Senators have reportedly rejected the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek military intervention in the ongoing leadership crisis in Niger Republic; as sources revealed that many lawmakers from the Northern part of Nigeria argued that the lives and properties of their people might be at risk if the request is granted.

The Punch reported that one of the sources who spoke about this matter said the Senators discussed the implications of military intervention on the security of Nigerians particularly the northerners. According to the source, yesterday’s plenary session was a stormy one, because many senators from the North feared that the lives of their people might be at risk if the war is allowed to play out. The source, however, maintained that none of the Senators were happy about the leadership crisis in Niger Republic.

The source had said, “Senators from the North are not in support of the proposed deployment of troops to Niger.

“Some of us were not happy with the coup, especially with the attendant implication for the West African region. We were also not happy with the way the coup plotters were grandstanding because we as a country have been good to them.”

The Punch reported that the Senate sought that President Tinubu addresses the matter with diplomacy rather than resorting back to war. The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, had read the resolution after the closed door session.
