Subsidy: Shehu Sani Calls For Transparency In Allocation Of ₦500 Billion Palliative Funds

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards alleting the impact of subsidy removal by submitting a request to the House of Representatives for an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act. The proposed amendment aims to enable the Federal Government to secure ₦500 billion, which will be allocated for palliative measures.

In response to this development, Shehu Sani, a former Nigerian lawmaker and renowned human rights activist, took to Twitter to express his viewpoint. Sani emphasized the importance of transparency in handling the allocated funds.

He urged the National Assembly to demand a comprehensive breakdown of the figures, ascertain the entity responsible for managing the funds, identify the government agency overseeing the disbursement process, and scrutinise the entire operation. By doing so, Sani believes that transparency will be ensured, and past incidents of mismanagement, such as the humanitarian ministry fiasco, will be avoided.

His Words:

The decision to remove the subsidy was implemented by President Bola Tinubu during his inauguration ceremony on May 29. However, the removal has had adverse effects, resulting in a significant increase in the cost of living for Nigerians. The proposed allocation of ₦500 billion for palliatives aims to allete the burden on the citizens and mitigate the challenges caused by the subsidy removal.
