FG Wants To Give Lawmakers 70 Billion While Poor Nigerians Will Get 53 Naira A Day – Nzeh Ezeocha

A few hours ago, veteran journalist, and public affairs commentator, Nzeh Ezeocha came out to decry the sharp contrast between palliatives rolled out by the Tinubu administration for lawmakers and ordinary Nigerians respectively.

Recall that on Thursday, July 13, a report from Daily Trust indicated that the whopping sum of 70 billion Naira has been earmarked as palliatives for lawmakers at the National Assembly to help in cushioning the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy. The report came on the heels of the announcement made by the Tinubu administration that it would soon commence a cash transfer program of 8000 Naira to 12 million poor Nigerian households for the next six months.

Reacting to the report during an interview on Africa Independent Television’s ‘Kaakaki’ program on Fridays July 14, Ezeocha, who is the Assistant Editor of the New National Star paper, argued that the lump sum approved for the lawmakers is quite huge when compared to the monthly stipend earmarked for average Nigerians, especially when it is broken down to a daily amount.

He said; “For the past two weeks, Nigerians have been calling on President Tinubu to roll out palliatives. Now that the palliatives have arrived, the question is; is the palliatives Nigerians were asking for? Because it is still favoring the rich, and continues to multiply the pains of the poor.

When I saw the news that the House of Assembly will get a whopping 70 billion Naira, while twelve million “households” will get 53 Naira a day, is that what we call a palliative? I don’t think so.”
