Chief Robinson Uwak reveals why there is resurgence of coups in Africa

Chief Robinson Uwak, the former representative for Ure-Offong/Oruko and Udung-Uko Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State in the National Assembly, has offered his perspective on the recent resurgence of coups in Africa. According to Vanguard’s report, Uwak attributes this unsettling trend to social injustices and institutional failures stemming from poor leadership across the continent.

In a statement made on a Sunday, Chief Robinson Uwak expressed his strong condemnation of the recent military coup that took place in Gabon. He emphasized that Africa is currently grappling with a wave of coups, actions that undermine the efforts of the African Union to promote and sustain democratic governance across the continent. Uwak’s central argument revolves around the assertion that the military coup in Gabon serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive structural reforms and the strengthening of democratic institutions. These measures are crucial in averting future military takeovers in Africa.

He stated, “I condemn the recent military coup in Gabon that removed President Omar Bongo. The actions of the coupists in Niger, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Guinea, Mali, Tunisia, and now Gabon, contradict the principles of democratic governance that I respect as a former member of the Federal House of Representatives.”
