Dele Momodu reacts to an old video of Festus Okoye saying that it is mandatory to use BVAS

Dele Momodu, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), took to social media to express his view after sharing an old video featuring Festus Okoye, the former Chairman of INEC’s information and voter education division. In the video, Okoye stressed the mandatory nature of utilizing the BVAS (Biometric Verification and Authentication System) during the voting process and the transmission of results for the upcoming 2023 general elections. He cited specific sections of the Electoral Act 2022 to underscore the necessity of these measures.

Momodu’s response to Okoye’s statements was marked by many interpretation. He pointed out that the Presidential Election Tribunal had previously communicated to the Nigerian public that the use of BVAS and real-time results transmission were mere assurances and not obligatory as per the law.

However, this clear difference in perspective raises questions about the legal status and enforcement of these electoral procedures. It depicts the possibility of varying opinions and interpretations of the law among different stakeholders, including political figures and the judiciary. Momodu’s commentary indicates that there may be a need for clarity and consensus on the legal framework governing election processes, particularly in light of the forthcoming general elections in 2023.
