It Makes No Sense To Score 25% In 30 States & Not Be Made President Because Of 25% in FCT – Ughegbe

The issue surrounding the requirement of obtaining 25 percent of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been a topic of intense debate since the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25th presidential election. The opposition parties’ candidates who participated in the election have filed a petition with the presidential election petition court, seeking to nullify Tinubu’s victory on the grounds that he did not secure 25 percent in the FCT.

Lemmy Ughegbe, a renowned Nigerian journalist and political analyst, recently shared his perspective on this matter. He expressed his belief that it does not make sense to deny the overall winner of the election the presidency based solely on not achieving the 25 percent threshold in the FCT. Despite not supporting Tinubu during the election, Ughegbe disagreed with those who assert that the 25 percent requirement in the FCT is mandatory.

During a newspaper review session on AIT, Ughegbe stated, “We hope that the judges, after carefully considering all the arguments presented, will be able to interpret the law without causing confusion. In my personal opinion, even though Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not my preferred candidate at the time, I still believe that no law should be enacted illogically. If a candidate wins the election and secures 25 percent of the votes in 30 states, it makes no sense to stop him from becoming the President because he did not get 25 percent in the FCT. This approach is illogical.”
