El-rufai Reveals How Southern Kaduna Elders Made Him Change His Mind On Christain Running Mate

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, recently disclosed that his decision to select a Christian running mate during his campaign for the governorship was influenced by southern Kaduna elders. El-Rufai made this revelation at a book launch and retirement ceremony held in honor of Ishaq Akintola, the founder of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). Having completed his term on May 29, 2023, El-Rufai was succeeded by Senator Uba Sani from the All Progressives Congress.

During the event, El-Rufai shared that he initially intended to choose a Muslim running mate but changed his mind due to the counsel he received from southern Kaduna elders. These elders, known for their influential role in the region, persuaded him to consider a Christian candidate instead. The former governor’s willingness to listen and accommodate their input showcases his commitment to inclusive governance.

The former Minister of Federal Capital Territory said “some unnamed southern Kaduna elders were angry with him for not accepting a list of prospective deputy governor candidates from people he called “self-appointed, so-called Southern Kaduna Christian elders”

The All Progressives Congress Chieftain added; “Nothing prepared either Bantex or I for the viciousness with which he was treated by the constituency he was meant to be represented by his presence on the governorship ticket. He offered thrice to resign from office within our first two years in office. Bantex therefore barely made it to the end of our first term, psychologically battered by the hostility and hobbled by a resurgence of ill-health”;

El-Rufai’s decision to opt for a Christian running mate highlights his recognition of the religious diversity within Kaduna State. By selecting a candidate from a different religious background, he aimed to promote unity and bridge the divide between the Muslim and Christian communities in the region. This strategic move was seen as an effort to foster peace and understanding among the various religious groups.

Revealing why he decided to settle for a Muslim Southern Kaduna woman, Hadiza Balarabe, El-Rufai said; “Her choice met with the usual hostility from the same persons that had so battered and demoralised Bantex, my first deputy.”

The choice of a Christian running mate was not without controversy, as it deted from the usual political norm in the state. However, El-Rufai’s decision demonstrated his determination to prioritize merit and competence over religious affiliation. By breaking away from traditional political considerations, he sought to bring about positive change and challenge prevailing biases.

The completion of El-Rufai’s tenure marked the beginning of a new chapter in Kaduna State’s political landscape, with Senator Uba Sani assuming office as his successor. El-Rufai’s emphasis on inclusivity and his decision to select a Christian running mate will likely leave a lasting impact on the region’s political discourse, fostering a sense of unity and encouraging future leaders to prioritize competence and diversity in their decision-making processes.
