It's Time We Stop Asking Why Coups Aren't Succeeding In Africa & Why Democracies Are Failing' – Shehu Sani

Amid the recent overthrow of President Ali Bongo Ondimba by a military junta in Gabon, civil rights activist and former Kaduna lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has called for a shift in perspective regarding the increasing occurrence of military coups across the African continent.

In a recent tweet from his verified Twitter handle as seen in the screenshot below, Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Constituency at the 8th National Assembly, proposed that instead of fixating on the question of why military coups seem to be prevalent in Africa, people should direct their attention towards understanding the factors contributing to the decline of democracy.

He expressed, “Rather than continually asking why military coups are gaining traction in Africa, let us redirect our inquiry towards the reasons behind the diminishing state of democracies in Africa.”
