The Problem With African Democracy Is Sit-Tight Leaders And Election Rigging – Kenneth Okonkwo

Amid the ongoing public uproar that greeted the military coup which has led to the removal of President Ali Bongo Ondimba from the seat of power in the french-speaking country of Gabon, renowned lawyer, and Labour Party chieftain, Barrister Kenneth Okonkwo has taken to social media to blame sit-tight-leaders and election rigging as the two major reasons behind the alarming rate at which military coups are spreading across the African continent.

In a tweet posted on his Twitter handle on Thursday, August 30, Okonkwo, who is a member of the legal team representing Labour Party at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, opined that if organizations like the African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) want to see an end to military coups in the continent, efforts must be made to bring an end to election rigging, and leaders seeking to perpetuate themselves in power.

He wrote; The problem with African democracy is sit-tight leaders and rigging of elections. If AU and ECOWAS want an end to coups in Africa, they should end the era of sit-tight leader and rigging of elections now.”
