As indicated in an official statement from the nation’s foreign ministry, the decision to expel the ambassador was based on his refusal to respect an invitation extended by Niger’s foreign affairs minister.

The statement also noted that the ambassador’s withdrawal was prompted by “other actions by the French government that run counter to Niger’s interests.” Nevertheless, the French ambassador chose to disregard the given ultimatum.

Subsequent to the expiration of the stipulated timeframe, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, praised Itte for choosing to remain stationed. President Macron remarked, “France and its diplomats have encountered particularly challenging situations in various countries in recent months, from Sudan, where France’s conduct has been commendable, to the present circumstances in Niger.” Responding to Itte’s decision not to leave the country, Shehu Sani questioned whether an African ambassador would be permitted to exhibit similar conduct in France.

Taking to Twitter, he expressed, “The Niger Military Junta instructed the French Ambassador to exit the nation, but he is declining to comply. Would an African ambassador be allowed to act likewise in France if asked to depart the country without being accompanied to the airport?”
