Hon.Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has revealed that works are ongoing to ensure Nigerians get survival packages while the minimum wage negotiations continue.
According to The Premium Times reports, Abbas stated this in Abuja on Tuesday, August 15, at the National Policy Dialogue on Corruption, Social Norms and Behaviour Change in Nigeria, organised by the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in collaboration with MacArthur Foundation.
The Speaker, who Hon Oluwole Oke of Osun State represented, said: “A situation where the take-home pay of a large segment of the population is unable to take them home is a recipe for all manner of corruption.
“This is why the House of Representatives is particularly interested in the ongoing review of minimum wage in the country. The House this time around will ensure that Nigerians get a survival wage that could take them home.”
Earlier, President Bola Tinubu disclosed that Nigerian workers should expect nothing less than double what they currently get when the new minimum wage is implemented.
According to Daily Trust reports, this was disclosed by Ajuri Ngelale, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, on Thursday, August 3.
Ajuri Ngelale said this during a discussion on what his employee was doing to cushion the challenges necessitated by removing the fuel subsidy on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.
He said: “I don’t want to preempt the president or the work of the minimum wage committee that is getting it down in those states, but what I would say is this: the president will want nothing less than a doubling. I mean doubling of the current minimum wage.”
The presidential spokesperson further revealed that governors of the 36 states received, as of June, N300 billion, more than they have received in the last two years, adding that the governors now have more money to pay workers.
